Minaret by Leila Aboulela tells the story of Najwa, a Sudanese woman from a wealthy and politically connected family whose life collapses after a military coup leads to her father’s execution. Forced to flee to London, Najwa experiences a dramatic reversal of fortune. Once accustomed to privilege and luxury, she becomes a domestic worker, struggling with cultural displacement, economic hardship, and a deep sense of loss.Amid her isolation and suffering, Najwa turns to Islam and gradually embraces a more devout religious life. She begins wearing the hijab, attending the mosque regularly, and participating actively in the Muslim community. Her growing faith becomes a source of strength, identity, and inner peace, marking a profound spiritual transformation. The novel also explores her relationships with two significant men: Anwar, her former secular lover who represents her past life in Sudan, and Tamer, a young religious man who challenges her evolving beliefs and future aspirations. Through these relationships, Najwa confronts the tension between her past and present identities.Overall, Minaret examines themes of loss, migration, identity, and the Muslim diaspora experience in the West. It highlights the transformative power of faith and suggests that through loss and displacement, one may ultimately rediscover meaning and a renewed sense of self.
